Trenchless processes involves very little disturbance caused by open trench excavation and cost less than open trenching.There are a variety of techniques available today including repair (e.g. lining) or pipe replacement.Pipe replacement is recommended at the need of replacing an existing pipe size-for-size or up-sized with a new pipe in the same location.

If there are few lateral connections, if the old pipe is damaged, or when additional capacity is needed then pipe bursting is the ideal

Pipe bursting is a trenchless method of replacing of worn out or undersized pipelines (such as sewer, water, or gas pipes) spending dynamic or static energy without the need for a traditional construction trench. "Launching and receiving pits" replace the trench needed by conventional pipe-laying.
